Five Steps to Becoming a Real Estate Agent

Now that you have taken the leap and are ready to become a real estate agent, the first step is obtaining your real estate license. Getting your real estate license in Mississippi can be achieved in as little as three to four weeks when spending about 20 hours each week on coursework. Here are the details on how to become a licensed real estate agent in the Hospitality State.
- Select a real estate school and complete pre-licensing
Make sure you choose an accredited real estate school that offers the Mississippi required 60-hour Salesperson Pre-Licensing Course. This can be done through online courses or in-person.
- Find a brokerage
In Mississippi, in order to obtain a real estate license, you must have an affidavit of a sponsoring broker. Selecting a broker is an important decision, this person will serve as your mentor to help get your career started, can influence how you get paid and help provide resources to help advance your career. You can choose a brokerage prior to taking your exam, allowing you to get started right away, or you can wait until after passing the exam as Mississippi Real Estate Commission (MREC) allows you 10 days after your exam to join a brokerage. Agents at Expect Realty are some of the best real estate agents in Gulfport, Biloxi and Ocean Springs. To learn more about our brokerage and our core values, click here.
- Apply for your Mississippi real estate exam
One you’ve passed your pre-licensing coursework, it’s time to apply for and schedule your Mississippi real estate licensing exam. A completed application must be submitted to the Mississippi Real Estate Commission (MREC). In addition to the application, a background check and two photos are required.
- Schedule and take your real estate exam
Once approved by MREC, you may schedule your licensing exam. You may sit for the state portion twice in two months following the approval of your application, and an unlimited number of times for your national exam during the same period.
- Launch your career
Once you’ve passed your licensing exam, it’s time to let everyone know you’ve started a career in real estate to begin attracting clients to buy and sell homes in Gulfport, Biloxi, Ocean Springs and throughout the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Once you begin working with your brokerage, you’re on your way to your first transaction as an official real estate agent!
